Before establishing himself in the film industry and Ram Gopal VarmaCompany, Vivek Oberoi he experienced a humbling moment that completely changed his way of doing things. Speaking in a recent interview, the actor revealed that another shoe was thrown at him during a college performance after he failed to land a small role. The experience, he says, was one of the biggest turning points in his career and taught him to approach every project with sincerity, regardless of the size of the role.
Vivek Oberoi remembers what changed his life
Speaking to CNN-News18, Vivek Oberoi reflected on his acting days at Mithibai College, admitting that he was initially free because of what he did and his family.Oberoi said: “When I was studying at Mithibai College, Mumbai, I tried to participate in a drama competition. At that time, I had received several certificates, so I was very confident that I would be able to take on a big role. I believed that this would happen when he found out whose son I was. This could be a burden on my shoulder.”Instead, he was cast in a small role as a non-negotiable point guard.“They gave me a useless job that had no dialogue. I just had to stand back like a guard, holding a spear. Meanwhile, the guy who took over the role of director forgot his dialogue, which I remembered very well. I was very upset, I thought, ‘I have received many awards, and you still made me a helper?’ Because of frustration, I stood there and leaned my head on the spear,” he said.The actor revealed that his carefree attitude during the match led to an unforgettable moment.“Suddenly, a shoe came flying towards me. Luckily, I moved my face, and the shoe hit my shoulder and fell on my back. I was very angry and decided to get out.”However, it was what followed that left a lasting impression on him.“The guy in front of me said, ‘You’re the biggest actor, and you can’t even do one small thing? You can’t stand up straight? If you can’t even do that, how big a role are you going to play?’ That affected me.”Vivek added that the criticism changed his mind.“From then on, I vowed that I would do every part very strongly. And before the end of that year, I was doing all the major roles.”

During the same interview, Vivek admitted that he came from a prosperous family but emphasized that luck alone cannot create a career.“Luck can buy you an introduction, not a name,” he said.Calling his father, veteran actor Suresh Oberoi, his biggest inspiration, Vivek revealed that the veteran actor started his journey with very little.He came from a very respectable and well-known family. He was blue-blooded. But when he wanted to do a certain job, his family opposed him. He borrowed Rs 400 from a friend and started a journey to Mumbai with the money.Vivek also shared that he wanted to be independent and left his name early in his career.“At first I was known as Vivek Anand. When I breathed, I saw tears of pride in my father’s eyes, and it was worth more than any award I have received.”

After years of preparation, Vivek made his breakthrough with Ram Gopal Varma’s ‘Company’ in 2002.
