Mumbai rains: Will Mumbai schools and colleges remain closed tomorrow amid IMD orange alert?
Heavy rains continued in Mumbai on June 23, causing waterlogging in several parts of the city and disrupting traffic. Amid the ongoing rain and an orange alert issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD), many students and parents are wondering if schools and colleges will remain open tomorrow.As of now, there has been no official announcement from the Mumbai administration regarding the closure of schools and colleges. Authorities have not declared a holiday and educational institutions are expected to function as usual unless a further order is issued.
IMD issues orange alert for Mumbai
The IMD has issued an orange alert for Mumbai and neighboring Palghar district, warning of heavy to very heavy rain, thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds for the next few hours.Sharing the weather update on X, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), quoting the IMD, said, “Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and heavy to very heavy rain with winds reaching 40-60 kmph at isolated places are very likely.”The weather warning comes after several parts of the city witnessed heavy rain overnight.
Waterlogging affects traffic in several areas
Heavy rains led to water logging at several places in Mumbai, affecting vehicular movement and causing inconvenience to commuters.According to BMC rainfall data, Mumbai recorded an average rainfall of 56 mm between 8 am and 11 pm on June 23. The eastern suburbs received 23mm of rain, while the western suburbs recorded 33mm.Several areas in the western suburbs recorded heavy rainfall between 10pm and 11pm. Charkop Sector 1 Municipal School in Kandivali recorded 32 mm of rain, MHB Municipal School in Malad received 28 mm, while Gajdharbandh stormwater pumping station recorded 26 mm.
BMC official talks about the situation
Talking to the news agency ANIa BMC official said the civic authorities are continuing efforts to manage the severe congestion in the affected areas.“We have not been able to find a temporary solution to this severe waterlogging. Our officers are still here to ensure that vehicles do not pass. But some rickshaw drivers are still trying to get their vehicles through. A rickshaw got stuck here in the center of the metro. The driver’s life was in danger. Two of our officers helped him out,” he said. ANI
The announcement of school holidays was expected
Currently, no official order has been issued regarding school or college holidays in Mumbai for tomorrow. Students and parents are advised to keep checking for updates from Mumbai administration, Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation and their respective educational institutions.If weather conditions worsen, authorities may make a decision and issue an announcement. Until then, schools and colleges will remain open according to the existing schedule.
