NEW DELHI: India continued their batting revolution in the T20 Internationals on Saturday, matching their own world record for the highest 200-plus total in a calendar year after amassing 219/5 against Zimbabwe in the second T20I.The 219-run effort was India’s ninth 200-plus total in T20Is in 2026, equaling the record they set in 2024. No other full-member nation has made more than six such totals in a calendar year, highlighting India’s continued dominance with the bat in the shortest format.More remarkably, India have now crossed the 200-run mark 52 times in T20Is, extending their all-time record. The next best side, South Africa, has achieved the feat only 29 times, highlighting the gulf between India and the rest of the cricketing world when it comes to consistently posting mammoth totals.

Kishan, Tilak saved India after early wobble
Zimbabwe struck twice inside the powerplay as: Abhishek Sharma and the in-form Vaibhav Sooryavanshi departed cheaply.Abhishek offered a simple catch to Ryan Burl off Blessing Muzarabani, while Sooryavanshi, after racing to 20 in just nine deliveries with four boundaries and a six, missed a Richard Ngarava bouncer at mid-off.With India under pressure, Ishan Kishan and skipper Shreyas Iyer continued the innings with a 66-run partnership for the third wicket.Kishan then found an ideal ally in Tilak Varma as the pair added 94 runs to completely wrest control from Zimbabwe.Kishan made an incredible 81, running perfectly through his innings. He reached his half-century in 31 balls before accelerating well, smashing 31 more runs off just 13 deliveries. His leg-side strokeplay proved particularly damaging, with Zimbabwe’s bowlers repeatedly punished through the mid-wicket region.Tilak complemented him brilliantly with an unbeaten 60 off just 29 balls, silencing recent discussions about his strike rate. The left-hander raced to his fifty in just 23 deliveries, mixing beautiful placement with clean power hitting. The duo powered India to 61 runs in the last five overs, lifting the visitors to an impressive 219/5.Speaking during the innings break, Tilak credited Kishan for setting the tone.“We feel that anything around 200 would be a good score here. But if you think about 200, obviously the score can go to 220, especially the way Ishan is batting. It looks very nice,” said Tilak. The 23-year-old also revealed that conversations with head coaches Gautam Gambhir and VVS Laxman prompted him to focus on scoring more on the ground rather than relying solely on aerial shots.“I spoke to Gautam sir and now with Laxman sir about finding the gaps. When you hit the ground, your consistency improves. I worked hard during the break after the England series, and I am happy that it has come today,” he added. With another 200-plus total added to an ever-growing collection, India’s batting unit continues to redefine T20I standards.
