Director Ashwath Marimuthu he explained how the film was made during the opening ceremony. He also described Dharman as a family-oriented person with a strong sense of humor.According to India Today, he also refuted initial speculations that the film would be based on the concept of “5 Rupees Doctor”. Instead, he pointed out that the story was built around a larger-than-life character set in a commercial movie franchise.

Ashwath also explained that ‘Dharman’ will combine a lot of mythology with elements of detective drama. He compared the tone of the film to two famous Tamil films.The movie is expected to have a powerful hero-led storyline while also incorporating some interesting promos.According to the director, Rajinikanth is not playing a character based on the much talked about “5 Rupees Doctor” real life inspiration.

When I met #Rajinikanth sir he said ‘we have to win at any cost, we are dealing with RKFI. Consider me as your supporter, I will be telling my opinion of #Dharman, you can take it or ignore it’.
