UGC asks universities to integrate SWAYAM MOOCs in July 2026 semester

In a letter to vice-chancellors, secretaries of the department of higher education and directors of universities, the University Grants Commission (UGC) has asked higher education institutions (HEIs) to identify approved SWAYAM courses for the July 2026 semester, allocate them to existing degree programs and ensure that students register before the respective deadlines. The commission calls on institutions to actively integrate massive open online courses (MOOCs) into academic programs rather than treating them as stand-alone online courses.

Universities have asked to map SWAYAM courses to the curriculum

According to the letter issued by the secretary of the UGC, Prof. Shyama Rath, Ministry of Education has approved a new list of SWAYAM MOOCs developed by national coordinators including University Grants Commission (UGC), Consortium for Educational Communication (CEC), National Program on Technology Enhanced Learning (NPTEL), Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNORE), Indian Institute of Management Bangalore (IIMB), All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), National Institute of Technical Teachers Training and Research (NITTTR) and Institutions of National Import (INIs).The commission has asked the universities to circulate the list of approved courses among the deans, heads of departments and nodal officers of SWAYAM University so that the students are informed well in advance of the registration deadlines.

The focus shifts from enrollment to academic integration

Universities have been asked to convene meetings of their SWAYAM advisory committees to identify courses that match existing programs and syllabi, finalize the credit transfer mechanism and display the list of approved courses on institutional websites and official social media platforms. The move aims to make SWAYAM courses a part of regular academic planning rather than an extra learning option chosen by a few students.

Colleges can conduct SWAYAM exams on campus

The commission has also reminded the institutions that those who have adopted the UGC (Credit Framework for Online Learning Courses through SWAYAM), 2021, along with the UGC framework issued in August 2024 for conducting SWAYAM examinations, can conduct SWAYAM end-of-course examinations at their own campuses. This is in addition to the exams conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA) and NPTEL, giving students another option to appear for the exams.According to the regulations, higher education institutions can allow students to earn credit through SWAYAM for up to 40 percent of the total courses offered in a program in a semester.
