Cristiano Ronaldo scored twice to rewrite Portuguese World Cup history as Portugal produced their most complete performance of the tournament with a 5-0 win over Uzbekistan in Houston. The result moved Roberto Martínez’s side to four points in Group K, leaving them firmly on course for the knockout stages and eliminating Uzbekistan after a second straight defeat.Portugal came under pressure after a disappointing 1-1 draw against DR Congo in their opening game, a performance that prompted criticism from the team and Cristiano Ronaldo. With Colombia already beating Uzbekistan 3-1, another slip-up will leave Portugal facing a tough qualifying scenario heading into the final group game.Instead, they responded with authority.

Ronaldo struck early as Portugal seized control

Portugal needed just six minutes to take the lead through the man who continues to change the longevity of international football.João Cancelo drove in from the right flank before whipping in a dangerous low cross in the six yard area. Ronaldo drifted from his marker with the instinctive movement that has characterized his entire career and produced a delicate flick that guided the ball past goalkeeper Abduvohid Nematov and into the net.

The finish did more than give Portugal an early advantage. This makes Ronaldo the first player in football history to score in six consecutive FIFA World Cups, spanning the 2006, 2010, 2014, 2018, 2022 and now 2026 tournaments, while also marking his 24th World Cup appearance for Portugal.Portugal doubled their lead ten minutes later with a brilliantly executed set-piece routine.

Awarded a free-kick outside the penalty area, Ronaldo stood over the ball in his trademark stance, drawing the attention of the defensive wall and the goalkeeper. As the expectation was built on a direct attempt, Ronaldo instead ran to the ball without touching it. The trick completely dislodged the defense and created the opening for Nuno Mendes, who curled a low left-footed effort around the wall and into the bottom corner.

VAR denied Uzbekistan before Ronaldo made more history

Uzbekistan briefly thought they had found a route back into the game midway through the first half.Abbosbek Fayzullaev dispossessed João Cancelo before the ball finally broke for Azizjon Ganiev, who whipped a finish into the top corner. The celebrations, however, were cut short after a lengthy VAR review.

The officials determined that Fayzullaev had fouled Cancelo in the build-up, with the challenge occurring immediately before the scoring move. The goal was reversed and Portugal’s two-goal advantage remained intact.

Portugal close out qualification as Group K is formed

Portugal’s dominance is reflected in the statistics. They controlled 66 percent possession, created 16 shots to Uzbekistan’s seven, registered nine efforts on target and completed passes at an impressive 92 percent accuracy rate. The win moves Portugal to four points from two games with a healthy goal difference of plus-five. Uzbekistan remained scoreless and were mathematically eliminated from the tournament. The picture in Group K will be clearer when Colombia take on DR Congo later on match day, but Portugal have put themselves in a strong position ahead of their final group fixture. The decisive test now comes against Colombia, a match that could determine the top spot in the group. A win would almost certainly send Portugal into the knockout rounds as group winners, while even a draw would be enough to secure progression. For Ronaldo, on the other hand, it was another night that added new chapters to a career already overflowing with records. Twenty years after his first World Cup appearance, he left Houston becoming the first player to score in six World Cups and the leading World Cup scorer in Portuguese history.
