Microsoft plans to take on iPhone and Android smartphones with this new device
Microsoft he didn’t get the success he expected with his Android Surface Duo series smart phones The company has discontinued the lineup after the Duo 2. But that doesn’t mean the company has stopped trying.
a new one patent application filed with the United States Patent and Trademark Office on February 29, reveals that the company is working on another foldable or dual-screen mobile device. The patent application describes the company’s vision for a foldable smartphone concept with a unique hinge technology called a “spine cover plate.”
Microsoft’s upcoming smartphones could have a design similar to the Galaxy Z Fold
According to the patent application, the phone could have a “flexible display” with a book-style design similar to the Galaxy Z Fold devices. However, the focus is on the spine cover plate mechanism which aims to protect the system from a device hinge by covering the structural element.
The differentiating factor between the normal hinge and Microsoft’s design is that the column cover automatically adjusts when opening and closing the phone to avoid unnecessary gaps around the hinge to protect it from dust and water. Samsung’s design currently offers an IPX8 rating, making its foldables only water-resistant.
The patent also mentions that the new hinge mechanism could allow Microsoft to eliminate the less visible hinge fold than current options available on the market.
In addition, Microsoft has also mentioned techniques that could allow them to reduce the overall thickness of the foldable smartphone by allowing the spine cover plate to come closer to the hinge of the device when folded.
“By retracting the column cover plate toward the central column, as the first display support frame and the second display support frame are rotated in a face-to-face orientation, the width of the folded computing device is reduced, thereby allowing easier and more comfortable handling of the device, such as with one hand,” Microsoft noted in the patent.
An interesting idea, but the practicality is a question mark
The entire smartphone market is looking for a way to remove the folding fold from their smartphones. Some brands have already implemented the water drop folding mechanism to reduce it, but there is nothing like a wrinkle-free folding. Apart from that, the durability quotient of foldables is also important considering all the moving parts these phones have.
That said, adding another layer or moving part on top of the entire folding mechanism doesn’t seem like a smart move despite the added benefits and durability that Microsoft has explained in the patent application.
