New Delhi: Opener: Ben Duckett believes England will not hesitate to test India’s senior batters with the short ball if they feel it is the right tactic, although the visitors know the challenge will be very different from what they encountered in their 4-0 T20I sweep.England’s string of bouncers has baffled India’s young batting line-up in the T20Is, with the likes of Abhishek SharmaVaibhav Sooryavanshi and: Ishan Kishan repeatedly targeted. It was asked if the same scheme could be used against the returning ODI stalwarts Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill and: Virat Kohli:Duckett suggested that England remain flexible rather than abandoning the idea altogether.“We will test them. If they are good at it (playing the short ball), maybe we will not use the strategy. But I’ll be honest, I’m not sure, we can go ahead with it if we see it’s working,” Duckett said to a question posed by TOI in an interaction on the eve of the opening ODI.Apart from India’s experienced ODI batting lineup, Duckett knows that the English batsmen will have to be at their best while facing Jasprit Bumrah. Facing the only Indian spearhead in Test cricket, the left-hander conceded the demands of the 50-over format made the competition a completely different proposition.“There are not many weaknesses (in Bumrah),” Duckett said. “It (faces Bumrah) depends on if the ball is swinging or if the ball is not swinging much. Obviously he can swing the ball both ways close to 90 miles an hour, so hopefully it’s blue skies, no clouds and it doesn’t move too much. That will help a lot.”“He’s just the type of bowler I think India will use in the innings to try and get wickets all the time and we have to try and fight that. I only faced him in Test cricket where you don’t have to look to score very fast. There is no pressure to score whereas in 50-over cricket, you don’t look for him to survive. You still have to find ways to score him. But I think our players have dealt with him enough and each individual has different plans for him,” Duckett added.Despite England’s emphatic T20I success, Duckett was quick to point out that the ODI series will be a different assessment altogether.“Obviously, this is a different side for India from the T20Is. They have brought some strong players, so we know it will be a tough challenge. The return of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, however, will not change England’s approach, added the England opener. “Both (Virat and Rohit) are exceptional players, but I don’t think we need to change our team dynamics too much.(This interaction is sponsored by Sony Sports)
