Former New Zealand player Sam Neillbest known for playing dr. Alan Grant from Jurassic Park, has died aged 78.His family confirmed the news in a statement, calling his death “sudden and unexpected.” They also explained that his death was not related to his previous battle with angioimmunoblastic T-cell lymphoma. Earlier this year, Neill announced that he was cancer-free and looking forward to continuing his acting career. In a career spanning more than five decades, Neill has appeared in over 150 film and television programs. Although he became an international star through Jurassic Park (1993), his notable films also included Sleeping Dogs, My Best Job, Possession, Omen III: The Final Conflict and Hunt for the Wilderpeople.Away from Hollywood, however, Neill found his greatest joy on his farm and vineyard in New Zealand.
Sam Neill enjoyed a quiet life away from the limelight
Despite his international fame, Neill has often said that he has never followed a celebrity. Instead, he preferred to spend his time at his Central Otago estate, his prize-winning home, Two Paddocks, and a large herd of livestock. Many of his animals became internet favorites after Neill frequently featured them in funny social media videos, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. These animals, from ducks and pigs, sheep and cows, have been famously named by friends and colleagues, including Michael Caine, Meryl Streep, Graham Norton and Helena Bonham Carter.Speaking to the Chicago Tribune in 1995, Neill reflected on his path to fame.“I never had an idol, or motivation or desire, which meant I had a lot of freedom to do whatever pleased me at the time.”
His family was not really visible
Neill was known for keeping his private life private. He married Japanese actress Noriko Watanabe in 1989 when the two met while working on Dead Calm, which also starred Nicole Kidman.Watanabe has built a successful career in the film industry, working on blockbusters including Hacksaw Ridge, Silence and The Power of the Dog, while also working as a makeup artist for stars including Nicole Kidman and Liam Neeson. The couple split in 2017 after nearly three decades together. Before marriage, Neill was in a long-term relationship with New Zealand actress Lisa Harrow, her Omen III co-star. They welcomed a son together during their relationship.
Sam Neill was a father of four children
Neill left behind four children. His eldest son, Andrew, was put up for adoption when the actor was twenty years old. The two reunited after 25 years of searching for each other.Speaking to The Times in 2014, Neill described their reunion as important but far from the glamor shown in the movies.“Nobody cries in anybody’s arms; it’s too big,” he said.Neill also shares a son, Tim, with Lisa Harrow. With Watanabe, she had a daughter, Elena, and also adopted her daughter from a previous relationship, Maiko.Elena made brief appearances in acting before starting a career as a tattoo artist in Melbourne, Australia. Both Elena and Maiko later became mothers, making Neill a proud grandfather.
His farm became his greatest passion
Although millions know him as one of Hollywood’s most famous actors, Neill often said that his happiest moments were tending to his farm and making wine. His winery, Two Paddocks, was established in 1993 and has gained worldwide recognition.Regarding his vineyard, Neill once joked that he wanted people to respect his wine more than his fame.“My wine has more dimensions than I would like to have. I don’t expect people to take me seriously, but I’m sure they respect my wine.”Sam Neill leaves behind an incredible legacy as an actor, winemaker and storyteller whose warmth, humor and love of simple life won him admiration beyond the world of cinema.
