Former England captain: Michael Vaughan launched a scathing attack on England’s leadership, calling for the head coach Brendon McCullum and managing director of cricket Rob Key who will step down Ben Stokes: brought the curtain down on his international career.Stokes, 35, announced his retirement from international cricket and relinquished the England captaincy after the New Zealand team’s 160-run defeat in the third Test at Trent Bridge on Sunday. The result sealed a 2-1 series defeat and extended England’s disappointing run in the top format.England have now managed just two wins from their last 10 Test matches, a run that includes defeats to Australia and New Zealand, along with a home series draw against India.Reacting to the team’s recent performances, Vaughan said he had reached a point where he could no longer accept England’s standards.“When I saw that on the fourth night last week, I went ‘nah, we can’t accept that’ as ex-players in the game,” Vaughan said on the Stick to Cricket podcast.“And that’s when I looked and I went ‘nah, enough is enough’. English cricket has got to be better than that.”Vaughan believes the time has come for more changes at the top, questioning whether McCullum is the right man to lead England despite his popularity.“I think Baz McCullum is a good man but he is not a good coach and for England, as former players and fans of English cricket, we should aim to be the number one team in the world and currently ranked seventh.“We’ve won two games out of 10 games, and those two wins came at Lord’s on a cesspit and at the MCG over two days, so the only two games we’ve won have been on the farmers’ field.“That’s not right.”The former captain said England supporters deserve better and insisted the team’s current trajectory was unacceptable.“I want a change. I’ve seen enough. I care a lot about English cricket and I hate watching that and you can’t tell me that 20-odd thousand don’t think the same,” said Vaughan.“If you’re in the opposition in your own back yard laughing at you, enough is enough. We have to move on.”Vaughan also questioned the future of Rob Key, who has been in charge of England cricket operations since being replaced. Ashley Giles as managing director in 2022. Key appointed McCullum as Test coach later that year before expanding his responsibilities to all three international formats in September 2024.According to Vaughan, England’s struggles are not limited to Test cricket, with the team’s white-ball performances also declining under the current structure.“I was so disappointed watching it, it was ridiculous,” Vaughan said. “You have to say Rob Key’s job is on the line. It has to be on the line. I wouldn’t be surprised if Rob Key goes.“They’re not well coached. You’re telling me if Andy Flower is in charge … this team will get the results they’re getting? No chance.”With Stokes’ retirement ending one of England’s most influential seasons, Vaughan believes the team should now use the opportunity to reset their leadership and direction after a long season of disappointing results.
