NEW DELHI: Former India off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin strongly criticized those who chose to leave Sanju Samson from India’s T20I squad for the upcoming tour of Zimbabwe, calling the decision “unfair”. Ashwin also warned that frequent team changes could create uncertainty among the players and harm India’s T20 setup.Speaking on his YouTube show Ash Ki Baat, Ashwin said that he completely disagreed with the decision.“I mean, what can I say? It’s just unfair. It’s just unfair. I don’t agree with that. But that’s it. I mean, I don’t know. Seriously, it’s hard.”Ashwin questioned the logic behind dropping Samson after some poor scores and wondered who would be next if the team continued to lose.“Sanju has dropped because of losses and form. He is gone. We have lost two matches. If we lose again, will someone else drop? Who is next? That is wrong. I really hope the Indian team will find it. Indian cricketers should not be put in an uncertain position.”Samson’s absence has become one of the biggest talking points in Indian cricket. The wicketkeeper-batter, who was named the Player of the Tournament in this year’s T20 World Cup, made scores of 5, 0 and 1 in his last three innings against Ireland and the opening T20I against England.Samson was replaced in the playing XI by 15-year-old batting sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi and was soon left out of the Zimbabwe-bound squad.Ashwin said such decisions make players think about protecting their place rather than winning matches.“As I said before after the SKY incident, the players will become insular. They will start thinking about themselves only. In T20 cricket, that is detrimental.”“When batters start thinking they’re going to be dropped if they don’t score runs, they start playing to protect their place on the team, which is more dangerous.”Ashwin added that even if Samson gets another opportunity, the pressure of keeping his place may affect the way he bats.“I’m still saying, think about Sanju getting another chance. He’ll start thinking for himself again. And you can’t even say that’s wrong.”“If Sanju scores 45 or 48 off 25 balls and takes two more deliveries to reach his fifty, you can’t say that’s wrong because he’s trying to defend his place in the team. I really hope… I really hope they will find a solution to this.”Ashwin further argued that a good domestic season should not automatically guarantee an India call-up, while responding to suggestions that players like Prabhsimran Singh deserve opportunities after impressive performances.“In our TNPL team, there is a player named Hunny Saini.
