Aaisha’s idea is based on a scientific concept known as biomimicry: designing new technologies by learning from nature.Mussels survive in one of the harshest environments imaginable. Despite being constantly exposed to seawater and waves, they remain firmly attached to rocks using specialized adhesive proteins. A summer of mentorship and innovation
As part of the competition, each finalist is paired with a 3M scientist who helps develop the project before the final jury.Aaisha will be mentored by Dr. Rohit Gupta, a semiconductor marketing manager at 3M who previously worked in research and development, creating bonding materials for electric vehicle batteries and sustainable materials technologies.A polymer scientist with multiple patents and several innovation awards, Gupta also actively supports young students through STEM programs. Over the next few months, he will help Aaisha strengthen her project before presenting it at the 3M Innovation Center in St. Paul, Minnesota, where the finalists will display their work in October.

For Aaisha, science is not confined to laboratories.When asked about his favorite invention of the last century, he chose CRISPR gene-editing technology, admiring its ability to precisely modify DNA and potentially transform medicine and agriculture.She believes that scientific discoveries inspired by natural biological systems can solve some of humanity’s greatest challenges, from treating inherited diseases to developing crops that can better withstand drought and disease.Their long-term ambition reflects this mindset.“In 15 years, I aspire to be an environmental scientist because I’m passionate about studying nature and keeping it clean and sustainable,” she says. “By working together, I hope to contribute to meaningful solutions and help make a positive impact on the world through science, technology and innovation.”A quote he admires from renowned inventor and architect Buckminster Fuller perhaps best sums up his approach:“You never change things by fighting the existing reality.
