MUMBAI: NCP-SP leader Rohit PawarFahad Ahmad and representatives of various student organizations met the Mumbai Police Commissioner on Tuesday afternoon to raise their concerns over the alleged harassment of students following FIRs registered during the recent student protests.The delegation sought clarity on the actions being taken against the students named in the cases. The representatives said that police officials assured them that further proceedings against the students would be handled cautiously and no harsh action would be initiated.Police discuss warnings and student responsesAamir Kazi of the All India Students’ Federation (AISF), who was part of the delegation, said the police assured them that they would proceed slowly with notices and other formalities related to FIRs.“While the decision to withdraw or quash FIRs can only be taken by the home department, the police have assured us that they will go slow with notices and other formalities. The commissioner also told us that students can respond to calls on WhatsApp and visit the police station at their convenience,” said Kazi.The delegation had expressed concern over the impact of the FIRs on the students involved in the protests and asked the authorities to consider their situation while taking further action.Police explain the process behind FIR registrationsAccording to Kazi, police officials informed the delegation that they were initially unsure about the leadership of the protests, which led to multiple FIRs being registered.Police representatives assured the student groups that the students would not face any severe action in the ongoing proceedings.
