The United States made an explosive start to the tournament. A thrilling 4-2 win over Paraguay showed the pace and smoothness of Pochettino’s attacking football before a composed 2-0 win over Australia secured qualification with a game to spare. Having already guaranteed first place, many regular starters were rested during a narrow 3-2 loss to Turkey, allowing key players to arrive fresh for the knockout rounds.
The route to Bosnia and Herzegovina is more unusual. After reaching the finals with a playoff victory over Italy, Sergej Barbarez guided his side through a difficult campaign in Group B. They started with a 1-1 draw against Canada before losing 4-1 to group winners Switzerland. Facing elimination in their final group match, Bosnia responded brilliantly, beating Qatar 3-1 to finish with four points and advance as one of the tournament’s best third-placed sides.
This is the first competitive meeting between the two countries and their first match in FIFA World Cup history. The United States remained unbeaten in their last three meetings, recording two wins and a draw, though all came in international friendlies.
Much of the spotlight will naturally fall on Christian Pulisic, who has orchestrated much of the United States’ attacking play throughout the tournament. Alongside him, Folarin Balogun returned after being rested against Turkey and is expected to lead the American attack. Behind them, the defensive partnership is also tasked with dealing with one of Europe’s most experienced forwards.
Bosnia continue to rely on veteran striker Edin Džeko, whose leadership, physical presence and hold-up play remain central to their attacking approach despite turning 40. There is also an interesting subplot involving Esmir Bajraktarević, the Wisconsin-born winger who represented the United States at the youth level before switching his international allegiance to Bosinania and Herzegov.
Tactically, the competition offers a clash of contrasting philosophies. The United States will try to dominate transitions with speed, width and aggressive pressing, while Bosnia is expected to remain solid in defense before looking to release Džeko and their wide players quickly into attack.
According to Opta’s supercomputer, the United States will enter as favorites with a 67.5 percent chance of winning in regulation time and a 76.6 percent chance of advancing. However, history provides a warning. The Americans have not beaten European opposition in a World Cup knockout match since their memorable run to the quarter-finals in 2002, meaning another significant hurdle still lies before the hosts.
Whoever prevails in Santa Clara moves on to Seattle for a Round of 16 meeting with Belgium or Senegal.
