Belgium produced a ferocious attacking performance to beat tournament co-hosts the United States 4-1 at Seattle Stadium, booking their place in the quarter-finals of the 2026 FIFA World Cup and ending the campaign on American home soil. Charles De Ketelaere scored twice in the opening half before Hans Vanaken capitalized on a costly defensive blunder and Romelu Lukaku added the finishing touch in stoppage time. Although Mauricio Pochettino’s team dominated possession for long periods, Belgium’s clinical finishing and ability to punish mistakes proved decisive in their advance to the quarter-final meeting with Spain at the Los Angeles Stadium on July 10.
Belgium seized control with a devastating first-half double
Much of the build-up centered on FIFA’s controversial decision to suspend Folarin Balogun’s automatic one-match ban following his red card against Bosnia and Herzegovina, allowing the striker to start after the governing body invoked Article 27 of its Disciplinary Code. Once the match got under way, however, Belgium quickly shifted the spotlight to events on the pitch.Rudi Garcia’s side settled down quickly and almost found an early breakthrough when a Belgian corner was partially cleared by Timothy Castagne on the edge of the penalty area. The full-back produced a powerful effort through a packed box, forcing Matt Freese into an incredible diving save that gave early warning of the pressure to come.Belgium continued to dominate the opening exchanges. Their aggressive press repeatedly disrupted the American build-up, and another dangerous move saw Dodi Lukebakio burst forward before cutting the ball back for Youri Tielemans. Reaching space inside the area, Tielemans dragged his effort just wide, passing up another good opportunity. The breakthrough finally came in the ninth minute. Leandro Trossard worked his way into space on the left before delivering a teasing cross that the United States defense failed to deal with cleanly. As the loose ball broke dangerously inside the area, Nicolas Raskin was the quickest to react, gaining possession before sliding in a composed pass in the six-yard box. Charles De Ketelaere timed his move perfectly and calmly slotted home from close range to give Belgium a deserved 1-0 lead.

The United States gradually settled down after a difficult opening and enjoyed longer periods of possession, eventually ending the match with 57 percent of the ball and an impressive passing accuracy of 89 percent compared to Belgium’s 83 percent. However, despite circulating possession effectively, clear-cut opportunities remained scarce against Belgium’s organized defensive shape.Their equalizer came in the 31st minute from a lucky but well taken set piece. After Balogun was fouled just outside the penalty area, Malik Tillman stepped up to the free-kick and ran hard towards the goal. The strike hit the Belgian wall before taking a heavy deflection that completely missed the foot of Thibaut Courtois, leaving the goalkeeper stranded as the ball rolled into the far corner to make it 1-1.

Any momentum generated by the equalizer was quickly lost.Belgium responded within two minutes in a move that perfectly illustrated their attacking quality. Trossard found space again on the left side and delivered an impressive looping cross into the penalty area. De Ketelaere was off his mark, meeting the delivery with a perfectly timed run and driving a close-range header past Freese to restore Belgium’s advantage to 2-1. The quickfire response stunned the Seattle crowd and left Mauricio Pochettino visibly frustrated on the touchline after seeing his side concede almost immediately after their equaliser.

The freese error proved decisive as Belgium punished every mistake
The United States tried to start the second half with greater urgency, pushing Christian Pulisic and Balogun forward in search of another equalizer. Belgium, however, remained composed defensively while continuing to threaten whenever they moved quickly. The contest was effectively decided in the 57th minute after a disastrous defensive error.A high Belgian ball over the top appeared relatively harmless, but confusion between the American defense and goalkeeper Matt Freese proved costly. Freese rushed outside his penalty area looking to clear the danger before hesitating under pressure from De Ketelaere. The loose ball fell kindly for substitute Hans Vanaken, who immediately recognized the unguarded goal and calmly rolled a long finish into the empty net. Veteran defender Tim Ream desperately dived back and launched into a sliding attempt to prevent the goal, but the ball comfortably crossed the line to give Belgium a commanding 3-1 lead.

The loss became more damaging when captain Christian Pulisic was forced to leave after a collision with Tielemans, further reducing the threat of the American attack during the closing stages.Pochettino’s side continue to find a route back into the competition despite the deficit. Sebastian Berhalter went close with a powerful long-range strike that drifted narrowly wide, while Balogun finally found space in behind the Belgium defense after being released by a well-lofted pass. Advancing from a tight angle, the striker tried to beat Courtoi at his near post, but the tall Belgian goalkeeper stood firm and made another important save to deny the hosts any hope of a late comeback.Belgium’s attacking prowess remains the defining difference between the two sides. Although the United States controlled possession, Belgium often made more clear openings, finishing with 15 total shots, seven on target and five corners compared to six shots by the Americans, only two of which tested Courtois. With the United States building numbers ahead in stoppage time, Belgium provided a final burst on the counter-attack. Jérémy Doku sped into open space before threading a perfectly weighted ball into the path of Romelu Lukaku. The experienced striker held off his defender, charged into the penalty area and confidently swept his finish past Freese in the third minute of added time to complete the 4-1 victory.

Belgium ended the night without receiving a single booking, while the United States picked up two yellow cards during a disappointing night in Seattle. In the end, possession statistics were few and far between as Belgium showed fierce efficiency in both penalty areas, punishing every major mistake by the American to end the co-host’s World Cup campaign. The victory sends the Red Devils to the quarter-finals, where they will face Spain in Los Angeles on July 10. For the United States, hopes of reaching the first quarter-final of the World Cup since 2002 are over, with defensive lapses and missed opportunities bringing an encouraging home tournament to a disappointing conclusion.
