Christopher Nolan‘s ‘The Odyssey’ has lived up to its huge pre-release hype, registering a strong opening at the Indian box office.

Music video Matt Damon advance, it matched the pre-release box office expectations to earn an opening of Rs 20 crore in India. Despite its Adult Only (A) certification, the film still managed to become one of Hollywood’s biggest openings of the year.

‘The Odyssey’ box office

According to sacnilk’s preliminary estimates, ‘The Odyssey’ earned Rs 20.76 crore on Day 1, the collections of which stood at Rs 17.40 crore after playing 8,413 shows across the country. The film scored 48.7 percent, driven by demand for high-definition screens, especially IMAX screens.

The English version of ‘Odyssey’ leads the collection

The film was released in English, Hindi, Tamil and Telugu, however, it was the English original that took the biggest share of the collections.The original language estimate shows that the original English film was clearly ahead, contributing to Rs 13.75 crore in the film’s opening day haul. The Hindi version followed with around Rs 1.90 crore, while the Telugu version earned around Rs 1.10 crore and the Tamil version added around Rs 65 lakh.

The existence of ‘The Odyssey’

The English release also showed a strong audience, drawing an average of 70 percent attendance in 2,113 screenings. In comparison, the Hindi version registered about 10 percent audience from 1,468 shows, while the Tamil and Telugu versions reported 22 percent audience from 227 shows and 25 percent from 346 shows respectively.

IMAX shows the number of opening days

As expected from a Christopher Nolan release, the big screens proved to be the biggest draw. The English IMAX 2D version of the film drew an impressive 73.86 percent.

‘The Odyssey’ among the biggest Hollywood openings in India

With an opening of Rs 17.40 crore, ‘The Odyssey’ will successfully join the list of biggest Hollywood films in India. The film currently has ‘Avatar: Fire and Ash’ which earned around Rs 18 crore nett ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ which earned Rs 21 crore nett.However, trade analysts are of the view that the final Day 1 figures may still see a gross total as the film is expected to close to around Rs 20 crore nett if midnight shows and revised estimates are revised. This opening is very popular because of the film’s certificate.

‘The Odyssey’ records pre-sale

The film also benefited from special pre-orders.With nearly 396,000 tickets sold in advance, The Odyssey is among the top four Hollywood grossers in India, behind ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ (505K), ‘Avatar: Fire and Ash’ (474K), ‘The Conjuring’ (443K). It has also surpassed ‘Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning’ (248K).

The film’s blockbuster debut global box office

“The Odyssey” has also started flying around the world. According to early estimates on Deadline, the film is expected to earn about $50 million from Friday previews in North America, giving it a three-day domestic opening of $117 million.In that case, the film will give Matt Damon the biggest opening weekend as a lead star and will be the biggest opening weekend for an action film in North America this year. The film will also have the biggest opening weekend for an R-rated film of the year, surpassing ‘Backrooms’ (USD 81.4 million).The film is already Universal Pictures’ biggest opening weekend ever for an R title, surpassing even ‘Fifty Shades of Grey’ (USD 85.1 million).
