More than 35 years since ‘Aashiqui’ became the most famous romance in Hindi cinema, the actor. Pooja Bhatt has revealed that the film was inspired by the extraordinary love story of his parents, a filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt and Lorraine Bright, who later changed her name to Kiran Bhatt.Pooja said the 1990 blockbuster drew heavily from the early days of her parents’ relationship, which began when they were teenagers. He said on the Cyrus Broacha podcast, “Aashiqui came from the love story of my mother and father. My mother was in a Scottish orphanage, and my father lived in the house next to it.The incident led to her bonding with her grandmother, Betty Bertha Bright. “My grandfather was called, and he said, ‘Listen, I just put my youngest son in a boarding school.’He revealed that the results were dire. His mother was sent to an orphanage, after which Mahesh Bhatt took over her role. “She got kicked out of school because of it, and my dad took over. He took her to the YWCA and wrote a fake letter saying she was a maid so she could stay there. She got a job at Grover’s Vineyard. She only knew two bus routes – one to work and one to home.“Pooja also added that the film will show a lot of part of her parents’ life. “She took care of him when he was very young. He is 77 now, he is 74. Aashiqui is based on this. I can be doing like my mother.”He even revealed Mahesh Bhatt and his uncle Mukesh Bhatt He wanted to join ‘Aashiqui’, he refused because his boyfriend at the time did not want him to act. Interestingly, Pooja’s story is in line with what Mahesh Bhatt shared in his interview last year, where he also witnessed the beginning of his romance with Lorraine.Bhatt told Pooja on his podcast, “I was 16 years old, she was 14 years old. She lived in an orphanage, because her mother did not have the means to keep her as a day student. One day, I saw this beautiful girl standing with her friends at the gate of Bombay Scottish. There was something about him that drew me to him. But in a way, love started with a feeling of inadequacy.”Unable to meet Lorraine in public, Mahesh enlists the help of a tailor who sews school uniforms to deliver his letters secretly. He also said: “I was impressed by his beauty and beauty, I begged him to carry my letter. He told me the danger of doing this because if he caught him, he would be fired.” And then he did! I wrote him a letter in blood and he replied in blood.”However, their secret love was not hidden for long. “It was all over, and the tailor was out of a job, and Lorraine was out of school.”Mahesh recalled that Lorraine’s mother was very upset, but promised to take care of her daughter. She forged her father’s signature to get Lorraine a place to stay at the YWCA, where she later trained as a receptionist and operator.A few years later, the relationship took a painful turn when Mahesh fell in love with an actor Parveen Babi. “I really believed in fairy tale love, but then I started dating Parveen Babi.” He recalled that he revealed the affair to Lorraine while their daughter Pooja was sleeping nearby. “I looked at myself in the mirror and thought, ‘All your life you hated your father for keeping your mother as the other woman.’Reflecting on the end of their relationship, she admitted, “My fairytale love turned to ashes.”After his relationship with Parveen ended, Mahesh found love again with the actress Sony Razdan and decided to marry again. Before revealing the news to Lorraine, he first decided to talk to Pooja. Remembering what they talked about, Pooja said: “I saw you sitting on the edge of my bed and telling me about the woman you met, Soni, and that you were going to marry her and go out.”Mahesh also recalled reassuring his daughter that her decision would not affect her relationship with him. “You remember when I told you that I won’t be here and please don’t mistake this for rejecting you. There is another woman in my life, but I love you. And I will always take care of your mother and this house. I can’t thank you enough for those words because you looked at me, and I thought you didn’t judge me,” he said. Despite their differences, Mahesh and Lorraine continued to respect each other. Pooja recalled that when some people questioned the legality of Mahesh and Soni Razdan’s marriage, it was her mother who defended her. Pooja revealed that, “When he asked about the legality of your marriage, he said, ‘Who gave permission? I will never forget, my mother stood up and said, ‘Who gave permission? I gave permission.’ He has my blessing.’”
