NMC limits medical courses with PG diploma, shifts focus towards MD and MS degrees
The National Medical Commission (NMC) has decided to suspend postgraduate medical courses across India, paving the way for a complete overhaul of undergraduate and postgraduate programs in specialized medical education. Admission to PG Diploma courses will be held for the last time in 2026-27 and thereafter admission to these programs will no longer be held. This is the beginning of an important transition in the field of specialized medical education. According to an official statement from the commission, the 2026-27 academic year will mark the end of admissions to postgraduate courses. After this, admission to PG diploma programs will not be allowed at all in the academic year 2027-28.It is one of many initiatives to make a more coherent system of postgraduate medical education. By switching completely to specialized undergraduate education, NMC hopes to further raise academic standards.
Major change in postgraduate medical education
For decades, graduate diploma programs have served as a means through which physicians could obtain specialized training. The NMC has, however, made a decision as to which undergraduate studies should be used as the main route to further medical education.According to the commission, many medical schools already have the capacity to offer MD/MS programs because of their infrastructure, manpower, patients and clinical facilities. Therefore, institutes have made it easy to convert their diploma seats into degree seats. It is believed that the change would allow better use of resources by the institutions and at the same time offer specialized training.
Medical colleges can convert diploma seats
To ensure a smooth transition, the NMC has allowed medical colleges which currently have diploma courses to apply for conversion of these seats into the corresponding MD or MS programmes.Applications will be processed through the Medical Assessment and Rating Board (MARB), one of the NMC’s key regulatory bodies. Colleges must submit applications through an online system. The commission has said that a dedicated application portal and detailed timetables will be announced separately. The conversion process is expected to help institutions improve their academic offerings without requiring an entirely new framework.
Decision rooted in previous regulations
The latest announcement is not an isolated policy change. It follows the provisions already included in the Postgraduate Medical Education Regulations (PGMER) 2023.Under these regulations, medical colleges could apply for conversion of diploma seats into degree seats. The rules had also made it clear that new proposals to start new diploma courses or increase existing diploma seats would not be considered. The latest notification now sets a clear deadline and lays down a road map for complete elimination of diploma admissions.
End of an era
Once the new policy is fully implemented, postgraduate courses will stop admitting students in India. Specialized medical education will progress fully to bachelor’s and master’s programs. The reform is expected to bring greater uniformity to postgraduate medical qualifications and could influence how future generations of doctors receive specialist training. As medical schools prepare for the transition, the announcement signals the NMC’s intention to create a more standardized and degree-focused medical education system for years to come.
