Getting into Government Medical College (GMC), Srinagar will be a little easier from the academic session 2026-27 onwards. The National Medical Commission (NMC) has approved 50 additional Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) seats, taking the college’s annual intake from 200 to 250.Approval is through a letter of permission (LoP) issued by the Medical Assessment and Rating Board (MARB) under section 28(3) of the National Medical Commission Act, 2019, as per PTI.
Seat expansion follows NMC assessment
The Department of Health and Medical Education said the increase is aimed at strengthening medical education and healthcare delivery in Jammu and Kashmir.Officials said the decision comes after an evaluation conducted by the MARB under the Undergraduate Medical Education Standards Regulations (UGMSR), 2023. With the latest approval, the additional seats will be available from the upcoming academic year 2026-27, PTI reported.
Second increase in two years
The latest expansion comes a year after GMC Srinagar received approval for 20 additional MBBS seats.According to the department, the increased intake capacity is expected to create more opportunities for medical aspirants while adding to the state’s medical education infrastructure.Officials said the latest approval further widens the university’s intake as Jammu and Kashmir continues to build capacity in government medical education. The additional places will be available for admissions from the 2026-27 academic session, according to PTI.
