England’s difficult day could have been very different if a few key chances had been missed. Shortly after lunch, Shoaib Bashir hit Devon Conway on the pad when the batter was on 71 and New Zealand 157 not out. England chose not to review the decision for lbw, only for television replays to show that the ball had hit the stumps. Later in the innings, wicketkeeper Jamie Smith dropped a straightforward chance when Tom Latham was on 129. The two batters went on to score centuries and added more than 300 runs together. Smith made amends by taking three catches later in the day, including the dismissal of Latham, but the missed opportunities had already allowed New Zealand to build a huge platform. On a flat batting surface, such moments are of great value and England are left to wonder what happens when chances are taken.
