Mohanlal is working under Kerala’s Ivory Amnesty scheme; It wants to publicize wild records

Popular Malayalam actor Mohanlal has reportedly approached the Kerala Forest Department under the state government’s amnesty scheme to declare ivory in his possession.According to a report in The Hindu, the move is aimed at establishing regular wildlife records and getting the legal protection provided under the scheme. The amnesty program allows qualified individuals to declare records of previously unregistered wildlife. Successful applicants may receive immunity from prosecution under the terms of the scheme.

The Forest Department records the claims of the players

Reports from the same website say that as part of the process, an official of the Forest Department recently visited Mohanlal’s house in Kochi and conducted an investigation under Section 41 of the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972.During the investigation, the actor was reportedly asked about where he found the ivory, when he found it, and why it was not mentioned earlier. The inquiry forms part of the verification process before a decision is taken on an application submitted under the amnesty process.

The Supreme Court has banned the certificates of ownership

The issue again gained a lot of attention after the Division Bench of the Kerala High Court delivered its verdict in October 2025. The board canceled the ownership certificates previously issued to Mohanlal. It also left the government law that allowed him to keep the ivory.According to the Supreme Court, the government notification of 2015 was not published in the official gazette. The certificates of ownership and the authorization granted to possess ivory products lost their legal effect.Even after the Supreme Court’s decision, the Forest Department did not initiate a case of illegal possession of wild animals.

Cases are still pending

The legal dispute involving the actor has not reached a conclusion. Mohanlal has already moved the Kerala High Court against the court’s order which rejected the government’s plea to withdraw his case.Apart from this petition, another petition filed by the actor to dispose of the case is also pending in the high court.
