Even with the modern furniture inside, the interiors remain true to the Ladakhi tradition. He explained: “They all sit down, in line with our tradition. Generally, the people of Ladakh like to sit like this.” Mud walls also serve a practical purpose, keeping the house naturally cool during the summer months. In winter, instead of relying on wood, Wangchuk relies on solar technology to keep warm. He explained how one wall – the “black wall” – has water bottles built into it, which absorb the heat of the winter sun throughout the day and slowly release that heat into the house at sunset. As he said, “Although the walls, windows and mirrors are modern, the technology used is traditional.”

The house features wooden ceilings, mud walls, and modern interiors that work in harmony with its traditional design. The same philosophy, combining tradition and modern life, extends to the kitchen. Designed as an open space with an adjoining dining table, the layout was guided by one simple idea: “The idea was to make sure the chef doesn’t feel alone,” he said. Wangchuk has incorporated traditional, waterless sanitation methods into the washroom, removing water entirely and instead systematically collecting human waste for composting and use as fertilizer.
Sonam Wangchuk is hungry for results
On June 28, Wangchuk took the CJP-led student protests to a new level by announcing a hunger strike. He said he will not stop until the minister of education resigns and there is a real change in the exams. After 26 days without food, he ended his fast on Thursday. This was done in the presence of BJP president JP Nadda, after he was promised that his major demands would be met.Since then, Dharmendra Pradhan has resigned as Minister of Education. The government has also set up a special fast-track court to deal with expeditious cases of paper leaks. Along with this, a working group has been set up which provides recommendations to make the national examination more robust and efficient.
