IIT Madras awarded 3,518 degrees to 3,106 students during its 63rd convocation, with four students receiving prestigious awards for academic excellence and overall achievements. Degrees awarded include undergraduate, postgraduate, joint and double degree programmes, along with 511 doctorates.The convocation also recognized the students who achieved the highest academic performance and demonstrated excellence in curricular and extracurricular activities. Major honors included President of India Award, Bharat Ratna M Visvesvaraya Memorial Award, Institute Merit Award, Dr. Shankar Dayal Sharma and the Governor’s Award.Four students receive prestigious awards at the convocationThe institute honored the students of different categories for their outstanding achievements. Degrees awarded in engineering, management and research programsDuring the convocation, IIT Madras Director Prof. V. Kamakoti awarded degrees to 3,106 graduates. The students who graduated included 812 B.Tech students, 302 Dual Degree students, 617 M.Tech students, 143 M.Sc students, 123 Masters students, 53 Executive MBA students, 84 MBA students, 32 PG Diploma students and 201 MS students.The 511 doctoral degrees awarded during the ceremony include 16 joint degrees with universities in foreign countries.The president of Zanzibar highlights the role of technology and innovationAddressing the graduating students, Dr. Hussein Ali Mwinyi, Chief Guest, President of Zanzibar and Chairman of the Revolutionary Council, spoke about the role of emerging technologies and the responsibility of graduates in shaping the future.“Every generation inherits the world as it is. Yours has the extraordinary opportunity and responsibility to shape the world as it should be,” said Dr. Hussein Ali Mwinyi.He added that artificial intelligence, robotics, biotechnology and quantum technologies are changing the way people live, learn and work. “Every great innovation offers humanity a choice. It can deepen inequality or expand opportunity. It can divide communities or unite them. That choice does not belong to the technology itself, but to those who create it,” he said.The IIT Madras Zanzibar campus was also highlightedDr. Hussein Ali Mwinyi also spoke about IIT Madras Zanzibar, India’s first international IIT campus, offering IIT Madras academic degrees.“The establishment of IIT Madras Zanzibar, the first international campus of IIT Madras, represents much more than an educational milestone. It reflects a shared belief that knowledge should know no borders and that excellence should never be limited by geography,” he said.Professor V. Kamakoti, Director, IIT Madras, said IIT Madras Zanzibar had entered a transformative phase as a global center for higher education in East Africa. The campus currently has 130 students, with representation from Tanzania, India, Kenya, Uganda, Ethiopia and Zambia.Dignitaries attend the 63rd ConvocationDr. Pawan Goenka, Chairman of the Governing Council of IIT Madras, presided over the convocation. Other dignitaries present were the Honorable Lela Mohamed Mussa, Minister of Education and Vocational Training of Zanzibar, and Ms. Anisa Kapufi Mbega, High Commissioner of the United Republic of Tanzania to India.Congratulating the graduate students, Dr. Pawan Goenka said, “A little over two years ago, IIT Madras opened its first international campus in Zanzibar. Today, its president stands before our graduating class in Chennai. This is not a coincidence of geography. It is a partnership between our peoples, built on the shared belief that education, innovation and human capital are the true foundations of sustainable development.“After the main convocation, degree distribution programs were held at the department level, where students received their degrees in person.
