He helped create the software behind Vikram-1, now this IIT Madras trainee is chasing his next dream abroad

Some students learn programming to create apps. Others dream of working at a tech giant. Spatika Prasad chose a different path, one that took her to the heart of India’s growing private space sector.Long before he packed his bags for higher studies abroad, Spatika was writing software that would help him launch a rocket into space. Today, after contributing to Skyroot Aerospace’s Vikram-1 mission, he is preparing to begin a master’s degree at Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e), the Netherlands, adding another exciting chapter to an already inspiring journey.

From the classrooms of IIT Madras to a historic space mission

As an embedded software engineer at Skyroot Aerospace, Spatika worked on software that played a critical role in the Vikram-1 mission, India’s first private orbital rocket mission.Although his contribution remained behind the scenes, he was instrumental in ensuring that the mission could continue smoothly.According to the IIT Madras BS programs, his responsibilities included developing and testing flight sequence software, pre-launch ground verification software and on-board simulations, systems that help validate a rocket’s readiness before launch.When Vikram-1 came out successful, it was more than just another mission for her.“Seeing years of hard work culminate in a successful launch has been one of the proudest moments of my career,” said Spatika.

How IIT Madras shaped his journey

Alongside his professional work, Spatika pursued the BS program offered by IIT Madras where he strengthened his understanding of programming, data science and analytical thinking.Reflecting on his learning experience, he credited the program with sharpening his approach to solving complex engineering challenges.“The strong foundation in programming, data science and analytical thinking … has played a significant role in shaping my problem-solving abilities,” he said.His journey highlights how interdisciplinary learning is increasingly valuable in emerging fields such as aerospace, artificial intelligence and embedded systems.

The next destination: the Netherlands

After contributing to one of India’s largest private space missions, Spatika is now gearing up for another milestone.He has gained admission to a master’s program at the Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e), the Netherlands, where he will continue his higher studies starting in August.For students, his story carries an important message.Career paths are no longer limited to choosing between engineering, IT or data science. Increasingly, breakthroughs occur where disciplines intersect.
