Germany have appointed Jürgen Klopp as their new national team coach, giving the former Liverpool manager the responsibility of rebuilding a side that has once again failed to make an impact in FIFA World Cup.Klopp has signed a contract that will keep him in charge until the 2030 World Cup. Speaking after the announcement in Frankfurt on Friday, he described the appointment as “a great honour” and suggested it would be the last coaching job of his career.“Jürgen Klopp doesn’t have a career after the national team,” he said. “In fact, this will be the highlight of my career, my life, my working life. I will put everything I can into it.”He replaces Julian Nagelsmann, who resigned after Germany’s loss to Paraguay saw the team fail to reach the last 16 of a men’s World Cup for the third tournament in a row.Klopp wants Germany to reconnect with its fansIt will be Klopp’s first coaching role since stepping down as Liverpool manager in 2024, when he cited fatigue as the reason for his departure. During discussions about the job in Germany, he said he felt “recharged”.Klopp has shown he can make unexpected squad choices and says his aim is more than just winning games. He wants the supporters to enjoy watching the national team again. He admits, “it’s been a long time” since he regularly watched Germany outside of major tournaments.“I want to do something with the national team that means people go home after the game and think ‘That was really cool.’ That’s what I want to see happen,” he said.Klopp has also said he is prepared to leave without any severance package if things don’t work out. He also warned that he would resign if the media did not “leave my family alone.”Klopp, known for his attacking style at Liverpool, became Germany’s pick soon after Nagelsmann.Negotiations continued for several weeks while Klopp was in the United States working as a World Cup pundit for a German-language broadcaster.
