The heat wave in Philadelphia pushed the players to the limit
The United States has been gripped by a severe heat wave all week, with the northeastern region recording temperatures close to 100°F (37.8°C) since Wednesday. By the time France and Paraguay kicked off at 5 p.m. local time, the official air temperature inside Philadelphia stood between 99°F and 100°F (37.2°C to 37.8°C).Meteorologists predicted a high for the day of 100°F (37.8°C), just a few degrees below Philadelphia’s Independence Day record of 103°F (39.4°C), set on July 4, 1966. More worrisome is the projected heat index, which combines temperature and humidity to create conditions that feel between 1050°F. 43.3°C), levels at which health authorities advise even elite athletes to avoid prolonged outdoor activity.

The National Weather Service has placed Philadelphia under an Extreme Heat Warning until 8 p.m., meaning most of the knockout fixture will be played during the hottest part of the day. Weather forecasters also warned that the threat of thunderstorms will increase as the match continues.

However, the organizers have introduced temporary cooling measures around the team benches. Portable air-conditioning units have been installed to provide players and coaching staff with comfort during game breaks, while scheduled cooling breaks are even more important under extreme conditions.The world players’ union, FIFPro, recommends mandatory cooling once the temperature exceeds 86°F (30°C) and advises that matches should be delayed or postponed if conditions rise above 96°F (35.6°C). Saturday’s temperatures comfortably exceeded both thresholds.
Paraguay embraces the heat as France adjusts
The conditions seem to suit Paraguay more naturally than their European rivals.Speaking before kick-off, Paraguay manager Gustavo Alfaro said the season was “very similar to what we had in Asunción,” while defender Júnior Alonso joked. “Hopefully it will be warmer tomorrow.” He also described the conditions as “absolutely normal for us.”

France entered the match with fresh experience in high temperatures after playing in approximately 90°F (32.2°C) conditions during their previous win over Sweden in New Jersey. Head coach Didier Deschamps acknowledged the challenge but expressed confidence in the team’s preparation.“It’s not good,” said Deschamps. “But I’m not worried about the heat. Together with the medical staff, we make sure that various measures are put in place.”
