FIFA has confirmed the match officials for France’s 2026 FIFA World Cup quarter-final against Morocco, with the appointment attracting immediate attention after the governing body selected a full on-field officiating team from Argentina. The quarter-final in Boston will be the first match of the tournament to feature all five on-field officials from the same country, a decision that prompted widespread discussion among supporters despite FIFA following an appointment pattern used throughout the competition. The heavyweight quarter-final, a rematch of the 2022 World Cup semi-final, is scheduled for July 10 at the Boston Stadium with kick-off at 1:30 am IST, where the winners will move one step closer to the World Cup final.
FIFA has confirmed that the Argentinian officiating crew is complete
FIFA announced on Tuesday that Argentine referee Facundo Tello will officiate the quarter-final between France and Morocco. He will be assisted by fellow Argentinians Juan Pablo Belatti and Gabriel Chade, while Darío Herrera has been appointed as the fourth official and Christian Navarro will serve as the reserve assistant referee. Similarly, Argentina’s dramatic 3-2 win over Egypt in the Round of 16 was officiated by French referee François Letexier along with two French assistant referees, with two additional French officials also involved in the VAR operation. FIFA made the appointments for France against Morocco on Monday, ahead of Argentina’s win against Egypt, meaning the selection was finalized before the latest controversy involving French officials.
Fans question FIFA’s decision amid recent referee controversies
Despite the established coaching standard, the decision to assign an all-Argentine on-field crew to a match in France immediately generated reactions on social media, especially given the ongoing rivalry between France and Argentina after the 2022 World Cup final. One supporter wrote: “All referees in Argentina for a match in France, FIFA is trying everything to break the World Cup again for Argentina.” Another posted: “FIFA can’t hide it anymore. All Argentinians, why don’t you take Messi to check the VAR too.” A third commented: “FIFA is a pathetic and corrupt organisation.” Added another fan. “You guys are f**** frauds. It’s clear intent.” However, these criticisms ignore the fact that France also benefited from having a French referee team involved in Argentina’s Round of 16 victory over Egypt. The match became controversial after Egypt saw a second goal disallowed after VAR intervention before scoring again, while: Mohamed Salah also had a late penalty appeal turned down before Enzo Fernández scored in stoppage time for Argentina. Egypt forward Mostafa Zico criticized the officiating afterwards, telling reporters. “The referee is not good. He is not fair. His injustice is clear. He persecuted us from the start of the match. He didn’t want us to win.”
The quarter-final revives the 2022 semi-final rivalry
Aside from the officiating discussion, the fixture itself has a significant history. France beat Morocco 2-0 in the semi-finals of the 2022 World Cup before losing to Argentina on penalties in one of the most memorable finals in the tournament’s history. This year’s meeting comes after France beat Paraguay 1-0 in a physical and scrappy Round of 16 encounter in which Kylian Mbappé was repeatedly targeted, while Morocco progressed after defeating the Netherlands in a penalty shootout following a 1-1 draw after extra time.

Attention is also focused on who could manage the World Cup final. FIFA traditionally waits until the finalists are confirmed before choosing a referee, as officials cannot officiate matches involving their own country. Among the leading candidates are Poland’s Szymon Marciniak, who refereed the 2022 World Cup final between Argentina and France, and Dutch referee Danny Makkelie after the Netherlands were kicked out earlier in the tournament. Another possibility is Brazil’s Raphael Claus, one of CONMEBOL’s 12 referees in the tournament.
