There was a time when Avinash Wadhawan he was counted among the brightest stars of Bollywood. At the beginning of the 1990s, the actor was signing several films, sharing the theater with leading artists in the industry, and was preparing projects that would later become the most successful in his career. Ajay Devgn, Shah Rukh Khan and Akshay Kumar. However, as his contemporaries continued to dominate Bollywood, Avinash gradually disappeared from many circles. These days, he is seen only occasionally on television and on OTT platforms. Here I see why the career of a promising actor took an unexpected turn.Interestingly, acting was not Avinash’s first choice. He was a brilliant student who earned regular college tuition, helping to ease his family’s financial burden. After completing his engineering degree from the Delhi School of Engineering, he plans to pursue an MBA. Although he was admitted to IIM Lucknow, he eventually enrolled in Jamnalal Bajaj Institute of Management in Mumbai. It was during his MBA that fate intervened. A fashion connoisseur saw her and offered her a job as a model. What started as a chance soon turned into a successful career. In less than a year, Avinash has exhibited at around 67 commercials, trade shows and fashion shows. As the model’s workload increased, scheduling the students became impossible, forcing him to drop out of the course after just two seconds.Eager to enter films, Avinash prepared a video and sent it to several filmmakers. The gamble paid off. After making his film debut in the late 1980s, he shot to fame with ‘Ayee Milan Ki Raat’, which became a commercial success and established him as a leading actor. Due to the popularity of this film, he acted in about 17-18 films in the next four to five years, which made him one of the most popular actors of that time. She went on to star in films like ‘Balmaa’, ‘Junoon’, ‘Dil Ki Baazi’, ‘Geet’ and ‘Papi Gudia’, alongside leading actors like Divya Bharti, Zeba Bakhtiar, Juhi Chawla and Mamta Kulkarni. At the time, producers saw her as one of Bollywood’s most promising young heroes, and she often competed with actresses who later became professional actors. However, as his professional life flourished, his personal life began to unravel. Avinash got married in 1990 and became a father in his 20s. Over time, his problems began to affect his work, and he later admitted that it was a big mistake.Speaking to Siddharth Kannan in 2024, Avinash reflected on the role and said, “I shouldn’t let my problems affect my work life. I left India and was spending my time in Vancouver and Los Angeles. I went to shoot a film and never came back.”His long stay abroad alienated him from filmmakers and filmmakers at a time when the Hindi film industry was booming, and opportunities quickly ran out.During the same interview, Avinash said that he had missed out on several films which later became hits. According to him, he was initially offered ‘Phool Aur Kaante’, but after he walked out of the project, he ended up signing Ajay Devgn’s blockbuster. He also revealed that he was considered for the part of “Deewana” which eventually went to Shah Rukh Khan but he turned it down due to date constraints, as he wanted to focus on his solo films at the time.Another big opportunity left with ‘Yeh Dillagi’. Avinash said he lost the job after arriving late for a meeting with filmmaker Yash Chopra, which happened Saif Ali Khan along with Akshay Kumar. The actor also said that in 1991 and 1992, he was the preferred choice of several filmmakers and believed that he was ahead of Ajay Devgn, Shah Rukh Khan and Akshay Kumar at that time. Although these actors became some of the superstars of Hindi cinema, Avinash’s career gradually began to decline.Considering the consequences of the missed opportunity, Avinash admitted that he was very disappointed and decided to take a break for almost two years. But when he came back, Bollywood continued. The leading roles were stagnant, and although he appeared occasionally, he could no longer live up to the popularity that seemed to be expected of him.As film promotions began to dwindle, Avinash found it difficult to accept the transition from a leading man to an actor. The transition wasn’t easy, but changing things over time changed his decisions. The actor openly admitted that after remarrying, finding financial peace became more important than chasing celebrities, which led him to turn to television for a steady job.His last big screen appearance came in the 2018 film ‘Mausam Ikrar Ke Do Pal Pyaar Ke’. Recently, she appeared in JioHotstar’s special ‘Sangamarmar’, a romantic drama sponsored by Rajshree Productions with Sooraj Barjatya working as the showrunner.Today, Avinash continues to be active in television, regional shows and OTT platforms. Although he has not regained the leading role he had before, he continues to work, adapting to the change in entertainment. His work serves as a reminder of how unpredictable the film industry can be, where success depends not only on talent, but also on timing, personal choices and the ability to collaborate with the industry.
