Students who have failed the Assam High School Leaving Certificate (HSLC) 2026 examination will have to return to regular studies in class 10 before becoming eligible again for the board examination. The Assam State School Education Board (ASSEB), division I, has made re-admission to class 10 mandatory for unsuccessful candidates, introducing a structured path for those planning to make another attempt. The directive was issued through an official notification issued by the board on June 23, 2026.
Readmission becomes mandatory for failed candidates
As per the revised instructions, students who have failed the HSLC 2026 exam cannot directly register for the next board exam. Instead, they must first secure readmission to class 10 and attend regular classes before they are eligible to appear for subsequent HSLC examinations.The move is intended to ensure that students receive ongoing academic instruction rather than preparing independently without classroom involvement.
Students can return to their current school
The notification states that unsuccessful candidates can apply for readmission to the same school from which they appeared for the HSLC 2026 examination.However, recognizing that some schools may not be able to accommodate returning students, the board has also provided an alternative. In such cases, students can enroll in another school operating under the same examination center from which they originally appeared for the HSLC examination.This provision is intended to ensure that no student is denied the opportunity to continue their studies due to institutional limitations.
The registration number will remain unchanged
The ASSEB has also clarified that students who rejoin class 10 will not be assigned a new enrollment number. Instead, they will retain the registration number that was originally issued to them and will have to use the same registration details while appearing in future HSLC examinations. The move is expected to maintain continuity in student records and exam documentation.
Option to change elective subject
The board has provided flexibility to readmitted students by allowing them to change their elective subject after rejoining class 10.However, this option will remain available only till the semester exam. Once the semester exam has been completed, requests to change elective subjects will no longer be accepted.Therefore, students planning to opt for a different elective have been advised to complete the process well before the set deadline.
