Many private and corporate schools in Telangana have remained closed today, July 10, 2026, following a statewide bandh called by a coalition of student organizations. However, the Telangana School Education Department has not announced an official holiday across the state for educational institutions. The pattern of closure varies by institution. While several managements of private schools declared holidays in advance, government schools have not received any official order to close. Students and parents have been advised to confirm the status of classes directly with their respective schools before travelling.Private schools announce holidaysA large number of private and corporate schools informed parents through text messages that classes would remain suspended on July 10. The decision was made by individual management to avoid disruptions to student transportation and campus operations during the bandh.Government schools and state educational institutions continue to function without an official holiday notification. However, the normal activities of some campuses may be affected due to the protests organized in different parts of the state. Why is the bandh called? The educational institution bandh has been called by a joint platform of student organizations including Students Federation of India (SFI), All India Students Federation (AISF), Progressive Democratic Students Union (PDSU), Federation of Democratic Youth of India (DYFI) and All India Democratic Students Organization (AIDSO).Organizations are looking for change in various areas of the education sector. Among their demands is the withdrawal of a proposal they claim would consolidate nearly 27,000 public schools into about 4,000 cluster campuses. They have also called for a fee regulation law to address fee collection practices in private educational institutions. Other demands include the appointment of a full-time education minister and filling of vacant posts of teachers, Mandal Education Officers (MEOs) and District Education Officers (DEOs).Weekend hours in schoolsFor private schools that declared public holidays on July 10, the closure is extended into a three-day weekend with the second Saturday on July 11 and Sunday on July 12.The Telangana government has earlier ordered July 11 to be considered a working day for public schools to make up the academic time lost earlier. Despite this, several private institutions continue with their own holiday calendar based on management decisions.
