Ever since ‘Mirzapur The Movie’ was announced, fans have been curious to know how the legendary gangster can leap from the theaters without losing his mark. Known for its gritty, violent storylines and strong language, the series has built a loyal following over the years. Director Gurmeet Singh has now revealed that the makers of the film did not want to tamper with the film and are instead seeking an Adults Only certificate while following the CBFC guidelines.Speaking to Variety India, the actor revealed that the team has been seeking an Adults Only certificate while ensuring that the film complies with the board’s rules. “We are looking at an Adults Only license,” Singh told Variety India exclusively. “So, of course, the CBFC has its guidelines regarding language, what we can say and what we can’t. We have tried to manage it and do it well.“
‘Animals’ and ‘Dhurandhar’ changed the face of theatre
According to Mr. Singh, the audience has started paying more attention to the stories told in the movies than they used to do a few years ago. He believes that the success of recent adult movies has made projects like ‘Mirzapur The Movie’ stay true to their original style.“I also think the audience has matured,” he says. “If you look at films like ‘Nyama,’ ‘Dhurandhar’ and many others that have been released recently, you can see that adult stories are now finding a place in theaters. I think this has set a precedent, which allows us to bring something like ‘Mirzapur: The Movie’ to the big screen without watering it down.
Turning a long list into a visual film
Since its debut on Prime Video in 2018, ‘Mirzapur’ has built a loyal following through its mix of crime, power struggles and family conflicts. Transforming the vast sky into a theater required some smart decisions. Singh explained that the entire team worked together to ensure that the interest rate remained unchanged and changed it to a new version.“Everyone was thinking about the film together. Everyone was looking out for the film and for each other. Whether it’s Farhan (Akhtar) and Ritesh (Sidhwani) as producers, we’ve had their experience and their vision behind us, making sure we’re not on the right track and helping us stay relevant.”
The screenplay continued to evolve
The script, written by Puneet Krishna, the producer of the franchise, was continuously revised as the team realized what needed to be in the film and what needed to be left out to keep the story clear.Reflecting on the process, Singh said, “Puneet, of course, comes up with the main points to start with within the film. From there, it becomes a process of changing the material and having a discussion about how much we can keep, how much we can leave out, where we should do a little and where we should cut completely from the story.”
Fans can expect surprises along with familiar faces
While long-time fans recognize many of the beloved characters, Singh said that audiences should also be prepared for unexpected twists and turns in relationships. “In some areas we are breaking what the audience already knows. In other areas we are bringing back things they like, but showing them in a new way. It’s all right,” he says.He added, “They will find unexpected moments and things they enjoy in a new way. We have the classics, but these characters are also doing something new in a new story. Even the power between them changes differently. “
