With the declaration of class 12 results, discussions in most homes tend to revolve around engineering colleges, medical competitive exams and universities. But for Tanvi Sharma who is from Rajouri Jammu and Kashmir and he is 18 years old, the future had to be something else.While most of her peers were preparing for NEET and JEE exams, Tanvi took a very unconventional route. He decided to opt for the Merchant Navy as a career.His decision has now paid off. A few weeks after completing class 12, Tanvi cleared the 2025 Merchant Navy exam after preparing on her own for barely a month. She is now set to begin her training in August.
Looking beyond conventional careers
In an interaction with ANI, Tanvi says that she was never short of options after finishing school. Engineering and medicine were open to her, but neither felt like the destiny she wanted.“I had a lot of options because I could have followed NEET or JEE. However, I wanted to find a truly unique career,” he told ANI.For her, choosing the Merchant Navy was more than getting a job. It was about carving out a distinct identity and proving that success doesn’t always lie on the road more traveled.“I wanted to set an example for future generations,” he added.It was a bold decision, especially at a time when students often feel pressured to follow familiar career paths.
A month that changed everything
Unlike many pageants that involve months, or even years, of training, Tanvi relied heavily on self-study.He prepared for the exam in just one month, believing that focused effort mattered more than the number of hours spent on books.Looking back, she says the biggest lesson she learned was that determination can’t be borrowed. “You can’t get enough from external sources only if you don’t ignite that passion and work within yourself to achieve your goal,” he told ANI.Those words perhaps explain his journey better than any result.
A journey that goes beyond books
Passing the exam was only part of the challenge. The selection process required Tanvi to travel repeatedly across the country, appearing at various recruitment stages in cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore and Goa. Each trip meant leaving home, adapting to unfamiliar surroundings and staying focused despite the pressure.For a teenager fresh out of school, it was an experience that required both maturity and preparation. However, he kept moving forward, one stage at a time.
The constant behind each milestone
When asked who deserved the lion’s share of the credit, Tanvi didn’t hesitate.“My mother,” he said in the interaction with ANI.In all the preparation as well as all the long journeys for the exams, she always had her mother to inspire her. The unacknowledged story behind Tanvi’s success accolades lies in the support she received from her parents throughout.
A new chapter begins
Tanvi is scheduled to join the Merchant Marine in August, to pursue a profession that promises responsibility, discipline and life far beyond the confines of her hometown.Today, she says she feels “incredibly proud and happy” to have reached this stage.His story is not an overnight success.
