Preity Zinta gave a momentary respite when it came to human rights; The Bombay High Court has ordered the removal of AI deepfakes and morphed content

Mother Preity Zinta is the latest Bollywood star to be granted interim relief by the Bombay High Court in a case of illegal use of her image, which it says ‘violates her personality, publicity and moral rights’.Justice Madhav Jamdar delivered the order on Wednesday while hearing the suit, observing that the misuse of such resources affects human rights, as per the Bar and Bench.According to the report, Zinta has asked for protection from social media users and asked them to remove AI-generated content, morphed images and other content that she says violates her personality and right to advertise. The court reminded internet advocates of their duty to act ‘promptly’ in accordance with Information Technology laws governing digital platforms. Justice Jamdar also expressed concern about the role of mediators in preventing offensive and illegal activities. The actor, through his representative, lawyer Jai Munim, said that “false images of depth, AI and artificial images and morphed images prima facie violate his moral rights, publicity and personality”. In the plea, Zinta asked the court to stop ‘unnamed websites and individuals’ from using her image for profit. The petition specifically sought protection for the use of ‘his name, title, images, likeness including his distinctive smile, facial features, voice, mannerisms, personality or any other characteristics’.Zinta also expressed concern that AI-generated content and chatbots that resemble her have been posted online by alleged infringers. His suit also listed brand names in his name that he did not make. It also stated that, “human behavior is a major part of the right to personality and/or freedom of expression, in which the Defendant exercises (and should exercise) sole authority.”Giving support to the actors in the case, the Supreme Court also said that in future infringement cases, Zinta can go to the internet’s representatives, including Google, Meta and X, to remove the content. If the platform fails to act, they will have the right to re-apply for appropriate orders.Apart from his acting career, Zinta is also the owner of the Punjab Kings franchise in the Indian Premier League.Preity now joins the list of Bollywood stars like Amitabh BachchanAnil Kapoor, Salman Khan, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Abhishek Bachchan, Jackie Shroff, Karan Johar, and many others, who have gone the legal route to protect their personalities and their freedom of publicity.
