The San Francisco Unicorns jumped to the top spot in the Major League Cricket (MLC) 2026 standings in emphatic fashion, producing a batting masterclass to defeat the Washington Freedom by eight wickets and increase their Net Run Rate.Chasing a challenging target of 191, the Unicorns raced to 193/2 in just 15.1 overs, leapfrogging the Seattle Orcas, who briefly climbed to the summit earlier in the day. The statement win also cemented San Francisco’s credentials as one of the tournament favorites heading into the business end of the league stage. The chase was built around an impressive 102-run opening partnership between Lhuan-dre Pretorius and: Finn Allenwho destroyed the Freedom attack from outside.Pretorius smashed 66 off just 26 balls, while Allen smashed 45 off 18 deliveries as the pair effectively ended the contest in the Powerplay.

Pretorius credits backing from management

Named Player of the Match, Pretorius said the confidence shown in him by the coaching staff has been key to his incredible consistency.“I think it all comes down to management backing you up, always talking positive and encouraging you to have a positive mindset out there,” he said. The young opener revealed that he went into the match knowing the fastest fifty record and celebrated reaching the milestone in just 16 balls.“I wanted to get the record after the first one, so, yes, I’m happy that I hit the last one for a six,” he said after the 16-ball fifty.Pretorius added that clear thinking rather than relentless aggression has changed his batting.“I think it can go both ways, like indifference. I fell into that trap… Now it’s just backing your options and staying within your game plan, reading conditions and trying to evaluate what I feel is important as an opening batter,” he added. He also recognized the difficult nature of the face.“On wickets like this, which are quite two-paced, to have clarity and support your choices and commit to it 100%. That’s my mindset going into every game,” he said.Freedom’s 190 was less than parEarlier, Washington Freedom posted what looked like a competitive 190/4 after Andries Gous anchored the innings with an unbeaten 83 off 50 balls, while Mitchell Owen scored a quick 39 over.Nikhil Chaudhary’s late 32 from 19 deliveries added valuable impetus, but the Freedom bowlers failed to take advantage of the two-paced conditions and repeatedly offered scoring opportunities.Three dropped catches compounded their woes as the Unicorn made light work of the chase.Asked who hit the biggest sixes between himself and Allen, Pretorius laughed before answering. “Probably Finn.”With the convincing victory, San Francisco not only completed one of the fastest successful chases of the season but also returned to the top of the MLC table.
