Ireland finally ended their long wait for a win in the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup, beating the West Indies by six wickets in Bristol on Saturday to register their first ever victory in the tournament after a 21-match losing streak spanning 12 years. The result not only marked a historic milestone for Ireland but had a huge impact on the semifinal race. A win would guarantee West Indies a place in the last four. However, the loss gave defending champions New Zealand a lifeline. The White Ferns can now qualify for the semifinals if they beat England later on Saturday, while England’s win over the West Indies will continue.Ireland’s win added to a memorable weekend for the country after the men’s team defeated India in a T20I for the first time in Belfast. After restricting West Indies to 128/7, Ireland chased down the target with 11 balls to spare. Orla Prendergast produced another match-winning performance, anchoring the innings with an outstanding 63 from 44 deliveries. His knock put Ireland in control before he departed with 21 runs to spare.Rebecca Stokell and Louise Little maintained their composure during the closing stages, with the latter sealing a famous victory by pushing the winning boundary at mid-on as Ireland finished on 129/4.Earlier, the West Indies struggled to build momentum after being sent to bat, managing only 128/7 despite some batters starting. Ireland’s disciplined bowling and sharp fielding ensured that the Caribbean side were never able to accelerate, leaving them with a below-par total to defend.
