The first trailer for ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ dropped online on Monday, setting a new record by hitting 500 million views in just 24 hours.Since its launch, fans have taken to social media to share their thoughts and opinions about the film, characters, plot, alleged leaks and more. However, one thing fans can’t quite put their finger on is the first photos of Chris Evans returning as Steve Rogers.Although it was confirmed that Evans will return as Steve in ‘Doomsday’ back in December and released the trailer several times, the appearance of the first meeting of the man with the ‘Avengers’ is making waves on the Internet.A fan theory trending on social media has confirmed that the version of Steve Rogers seen in the videos may not be the version of Captain America, but a different version.
Fans question the appearance of Steve Rogers
As soon as the trailer was released, social media users started debunking every frame featuring Steve Rogers, pointing out the subtle difference between his appearance in “Avengers: Infinity War” and his bearded appearance in the new movie.One of the most shared comments had a fan saying, “That’s not Captain America. That’s Captain freaking Hydra.”Someone showed what Sam Wilson and Bucky Barnes did when they saw Steve again. Another asked, “Is it just me or are Sam & Bucky not happy to see Steve? They know him well, do they feel something is off? Could we be getting Captain Hydra in #AvengersDoomsday?”Another said, “What if the Steve Rogers we saw in the Avengers Doomsday trailer pretends to be Steve from the 616 universe…but is actually Captain Hydra.”
Why do fans think it’s different?
The idea is based on Rogers’ appearance that changed a lot in the trailer, including the absence of his camouflage uniform for civilian black clothing. This has led some viewers to believe that Marvel is deliberately hiding a major change. The trailer also shows Steve Rogers summoning Mjolnir, seemingly proving that he is worthy of wielding Thor’s hammer.However, some have argued that the hammer seen in Avengers: Doomsday may not be the same type that Rogers lifted in “Avengers: Endgame”.
Captain Hydra’s connection
Much of the internet speculation revolves around Steve taking on the role of Captain Hydra, after the Marvel Comics ‘Hail Hydra’ dialogue in ‘Endgame’.In 2016’s Steve Rogers: Captain America #1, writer Nick Spencer introduced the controversial Hydra Cap storyline, in which the Cosmic Cube rewrites reality and turns Steve Rogers into a loyal Hydra agent. This version of Captain America was also able to use Mjolnir.Some fans now believe Avengers: Doomsday could change the story through the Multiverse, introducing a different version of Steve Rogers, who is Doctor Doom’s assistant.Whether the Steve Rogers seen in Avengers: Doomsday is the famous Captain America, different versions or Captain Hydra, fans will have to wait until December 18 to find out more.
