NEW DELHI: Former India cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar criticized India’s approach after the team suffered a 0-4 T20I series defeat against England, saying the head coach had been sacked Gautam Gambhircaptain: Shreyas Iyer or some players may be “easy to do” but not solve the real problem.India endured a miserable tour, losing the five-match series 0-4 after the opening game was washed out. The defeat came on the back of a 0-2 series defeat in Ireland, meaning the reigning T20 World Cup champions failed to win a match in two overseas assignments.Speaking in a video posted on Instagram, Manjrekar said that changing the coach, captain or players will not address the cause of India’s struggles.“The easiest thing to do for India is to sack Gautam Gambhir, sack the captain, sack some players who didn’t perform well in Ireland and England. That’s the easy thing to do,” Manjrekar said.Shreyas Iyer, who took over as T20I captain from: Suryakumar Yadav after winning the World Cup in India, suffered a difficult start. Under his leadership, India lost six out of seven T20Is, while one match was abandoned due to rain. The heavy defeat also saw India lose the No. 1 spot in England’s ICC Men’s T20I rankings.According to Manjrekar, India’s poor performances were mainly because the team was not prepared for the conditions abroad.“The right thing to do is to identify the main reason for India’s failure. And the main reason is that these T20 games are played. Ireland and England. Conditions abroad,” he said.He believes that players are selected mainly on the basis of their performances in the IPL.“Our batters and our team were not well prepared for these conditions. Why? Because the selectors picked all these players based on their performances in the IPL,” he said.Manjrekar has been critical of the IPL’s batting-friendly conditions, saying they make it difficult to judge players’ ability in challenging conditions.“The IPL has put a very heavy makeup on the Indian batters, all the batters. The IPL batting conditions are the easiest I have seen in my life. And so it is flattering to cheat. And that’s why you see a lot of batters up the order doing the crazy things they do. “He added that performances in the IPL do not always translate to success abroad.“So you don’t know which player is good if there is something there for the bowlers. And it’s not as easy as hitting a marble sheet like in the IPL. And that’s where the selectors have to be smart and pick people like Shubham Gill, who will be successful in Ireland, England, anywhere as a T20 batter,” said Manjrekar.Manjrekar concluded by saying that the focus should be on those responsible for creating batting-friendly conditions in the IPL.“Those guys who are advising the BCCI (batting-friendly conditions) to make the IPL more popular and more commercially viable. Let’s add four and six. Let’s add 100 plus scores,” he said.
