Don't rest Vaibhav Sooryavanshi after debut. The former cricketer sent a clear message to Team India

Former India leg-spinner L Sivaramakrishnan believes that 15-year-old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi should continue to play regularly instead of taking a break, saying that consistent game time helps the child learn, make mistakes and gain experience in different conditions.Sooryavanshi became India’s youngest international cricketer when he made his debut in the second T20I against England in Manchester on Saturday at the age of 15 years and 99 days.Sivaramakrishnan, who himself made his Test debut at 17 against the West Indies in 1983, said India should continue to support the teenager after giving him his first chance.“We have to give him a fair amount of opportunities with white-ball cricket and see how he does. He must continue. That is to say, there is no point in bleeding a young man and giving him rest or resting him. He doesn’t need rest. He can continue to play right throughout the year,” Sivaramakrishnan was quoted as saying by news agency PTI.“Especially for a batter, he doesn’t need the fitness of a bowler. And batting for a long time will also give him concentration, the mental work he can do for a long time,” he added.Sooryavanshi scored 14 off 10 balls, including two sixes, on his debut. Sivaramakrishnan said the team’s approach towards him should not change.“Once you decide to play him, you have to give him more opportunities. Remember, he is an investment for the next 20 years. I think what Vaibhav needs now is more support from the coach (Gautam Gambhir) and the captain (Shreyas Iyer) and the other players. Even if he is not good in some games, he should be supported. He has to move on.”According to Sivaramakrishnan, Sooryavanshi’s attacking style will naturally bring some setbacks, but that should not stop him from playing his game.“I want to see him guided and supported properly. He is the type of stroke player, maybe there are some risks he takes. But modern day cricket is about taking risks. So, he should not be told to control his natural instincts and how he approaches the game.”
