Ronald Koeman has resigned as head coach of the Netherlands following the Oranje’s shock FIFA World Cup 2026 exit at the hands of Morocco, ending his second spell in charge after the Dutch suffered their first ever elimination from the tournament. The 63-year-old announced his decision on Tuesday, a day after the Netherlands lost 3-2 on penalties to Morocco following a 1-1 draw in their Round of 32 clash. This marks the first time that the Dutch have failed to reach at least the Round of 16 in the history of the World Cup.
Koeman announced the emotional departure
In a heartfelt message shared on Instagram, Koeman admitted that the disappointment of the World Cup had weighed on him as he confirmed his resignation.“I have made the decision to end my time as coach of the Dutch national team. We all dream of a World Cup where we can make history. We did not succeed. No one is more disappointed about that than I am. As the national coach, you carry that responsibility. I’ve always felt it, and I always will,” Koeman wrote. The former Barcelona manager also reflected on how recent years have changed his priorities beyond football.“Moreover, the past few years have made me realize once again that there are more important things than football. Football is my life, but health is precious.”Koeman added that leaving was not an easy decision after working hard with the team for many years.“Since I have been working hard and intensively with this coaching staff and this group of players for a long time, this was not an easy decision to make. I am grateful and want to express my sincere gratitude for the dedication shown by everyone involved in the Oranje during my two seasons as head coach. He also expressed his desire to spend more time with his family.“I decided that now is the right time to spend more time with my wife, children, and grandchildren. At this time, it felt like the right and most natural decision.”
Historic World Cup disappointment
Koeman’s resignation follows one of the tournament’s biggest shocks. The Netherlands, who scored a tournament-leading 10 goals during the group stage, were held 1-1 by Morocco before losing in a dramatic penalty shootout. This is the third consecutive World Cup in which the Dutch have been eliminated on penalties and ends a remarkable record of reaching at least the Round of 16 in each of their previous 11 World Cup appearances.During his two spells in charge, Koeman guided the Netherlands to Euro 2021, Euro 2024 and the 2026 World Cup, while also leading the Oranje to the final of the UEFA Nations League in 2019. He managed 64 official internationals and drove the team to the semi-finals of Euro 2024.
The KNVB backed Koeman’s decision
The Royal Dutch Football Association (KNVB) has confirmed that Koeman has informed the federation that he will not continue beyond his current contract.Technical director Nigel de Jong paid tribute to the outgoing coach, saying: “Ronald has dedicated himself with full conviction over the past few years and made an important contribution to the Dutch national team. On behalf of the KNVB, I want to thank him very much for that.”The federation also condemned the racist and discriminatory abuse directed at many Dutch players after the defeat, stressing that “racism and discrimination have no place anywhere: not in football, not online and not in our society.”
