The Knockout phase begins after the record-breaking group stage

The expanded format of the tournament has produced unprecedented numbers, with 48 teams competing in 72 matches in the group stage before 32 countries advance to the Round of 32. The group stage yielded a record 215 goals, while 999 players appeared in action. Africa achieved the strongest representation in the knockout phase with nine CAF countries progressing, while seven teams – including Canada, Cabo Verde, South Africa and DR Congo – reached the Round of 32 for the first time in history.

Sixteen Round of 32 matches will be played this week, with fixtures spread across North America before the tournament moves to the Round of 16 at the weekend.
