India’s 2036 Olympic bid gets a timeline. IOC reveals when host will be finalized More sports News:
NEW DELHI: India’s bid to host the 2036 Olympic Games received more clarity on Wednesday after the International Olympic Committee (IOC) approved a revised host selection process that will end with the announcement of the winning bid by mid-2029.At the 146th Session of the IOC in Lausanne, members approved a proposal from the chairman of the Future Host Commission and former Croatian President Kolinda Grabar-Kitarovic to introduce a new stage of “Strategic Dialogue” in the selection process. The move is aimed at increasing transparency and providing greater clarity to countries vying to host the Games. “Potential hosts want more clarity. All stakeholders want more transparency,” Grabar-Kitarovic said while outlining the changes. He added that the goal is to identify and choose the host of the 2036 Olympics by the middle of 2029.The decision is significant for India, which formally entered the race by submitting a Letter of Intent in 2024 and is now participating in the IOC’s Continuous Dialogue phase. Ahmedabad remains the proposed host city for India’s ambitious Olympic project.
Financial guarantees, site visit and final evaluation
Under the revised process, interested parties will first proceed to the Continuous Dialogue phase before a shortlist is drawn up in March 2027.“Interested Parties will be shortlisted for the ‘Strategic Dialogue’ in March 2027 and must answer the Future Host Questionnaire and submit primary financial guarantees before being considered for the final evaluation stage, known as the Targeted Dialogue,” the IOC said. The Strategic Dialogue stage will require candidate countries to provide initial answers to the IOC’s question, demonstrate financial support and satisfy requirements related to cost control, project delivery timelines and infrastructure planning. The Future Host Commission will also conduct site visits to evaluate proposed sites and host-city plans.“During this new transition period, they are expected to provide an initial response to the Future Host Questionnaire and primary financial guarantees,” the IOC said. After this phase, the selected candidates will advance to the Targeted Dialogue phase in 2028, which will effectively serve as the final phase of the race.
IOC to end 2036 Olympic host in mid-2029
“The preferred host must update their submission. They must also submit a full set of guarantees. The final decision on the host for the 2036 Games will be made in the mid-2029 session,” said Grabar-Kitarovic.He further emphasized that future hosts must provide “a full set of guarantees, to provide the highest legal and financial security.”India faces strong competition from Qatar, while Turkey and South Africa are also expected to be among the contenders. At the end of the Targeted Dialogue segment, the IOC Executive Board will identify the chosen hosts and put them before the IOC Session for election. The Olympic host selection process was halted last year by IOC president Kirsty Coventry, who called for wider consultations with prospective hosts following feedback from IOC members.
