The Slovenian Football Association confirmed Vinčić’s retirement in an official statement released a week after the World Cup final.“A week after the World Cup final in the USA, Slavko Vinčić officially ends his historic refereeing career at the top of the world,” the federation said.The decision brought the curtain down on one of Europe’s most accomplished refereeing careers, ending football’s biggest task after years of progression through UEFA and FIFA competitions.
From Slovenia’s top flight to football’s biggest stage
Born in Maribor, Slovenia, in 1979, Vinčić began officiating matches in the Slovenian PrvaLiga in 2007 before earning his FIFA international badge three years later in 2010.His consistent performances quickly established him as one of Europe’s leading referees, resulting in high-profile UEFA appointments across club and international football.

The knockout fixture attracted a lot of attention after Vinčić dismissed Ecuador defender Piero Hincapié following a VAR review for covering his mouth while talking to Mexico striker Santiago Giménez.The decision marked the first red card issued by Vinčić at a major international tournament after previously refereeing ten matches across World Cups and UEFA European Championships without sending off a single player.
The World Cup final drew criticism despite recognition
